Evergreen Park: Revenge of the Bubbles is a level series in LittleBigPlanet 3 developed by T-Games and published on May 17th, 2017. The lead developer and writer is Billy Anderson, taking over Chunky104 from the previous installment, Evergreen Park. In 2018, the series was re-branded to Trixel Creative due to the closure of T-Games.

The level series was announced in August 2014 in a blog on the T-Games Wiki titled 'Evergreen Park News!'. The official blog post stated the new level series for LittleBigPlanet 3 will be a sequel to the original Evergreen Park series from LittleBigPlanet 2.

The series is considered a stand-alone sequel, with promotional content emphasising more on the 'Revenge of the Bubbles' section of the title. As a result, although the story is a continuation of the original level series, the original level series does not need to be played in order for the story to be understood.

The adventure was Team Picked on May 19th, 2017.

History

At the end of the original Evergreen Park, a sequel for the series in LittleBigPlanet PS Vita was teased. At the time, this series was titled 'Evergreen Park: Chapter II', and development started before Evergreen Park had been released.

After the original level series was released, Chunky104 and Anderson began to work on three expansions to the story-line within LittleBigPlanet 2 that were not intended to be sequels.

The major expansion was titled Evergreen Park: Rumble in the Jungle and was lead developed by Anderson. Development started in late 2013, with the series planned to span several levels as well as feature as a significant section of the (unreleased) Evergreen Park Hub, which was being developed by Chunky104 at the same time. The expansion never developed further than a section of the Hub and several assets and, due to lack of motivation, eventually development halted.

During Winter of 2013, Chunky104 began to experiment with a winter level intended to be released for the season. Similar to 'Rumble in the Jungle', due to lack of motivation, development halted.

At this point in time Chunky104 began planning for a new level series, which would eventually become The Adventures of Protag. As a result, he began to lose interest in the Evergreen Park series.

The third expansion, titled Evergreen Park: Go for Green was a minisode intended as a comedic piece that focused on the idea that the minions are still in Evergreen Park, despite the fact the player defeated Sir Bubblesworth. This single concept was originally intended to be the beginning of the 'Rumble in the Jungle' expansion, albeit in a less comedic fashion. The level was created almost entirely by Anderson as he saw increasing amounts of potential within the story, and was released on the April 27 2014 as a celebration of the 3rd anniversary of T-Games.

During mid-2014 Anderson decided that he wanted to halt development on consoles such as the NeXT and begin working on level design. Around the same time, LittleBigPlanet 3 was announced and Anderson decided that he wanted to create a big level series for the game. After much consideration, Anderson decided he wanted to use the story line behind the unreleased 'Rumble in the Jungle' expansion pack to the original Evergreen Park as a basis for the series. After talks between Anderson and Chunky104, it was decided that Anderson would lead develop a LittleBigPlanet 3 Evergreen Park, using the story line for the 'Rumble in the Jungle' and setting of the winter level as inspirations.

Several name changes then took place, including 'Evergreen Park: Chapter III' and 'Evergreen Park: A Rumble in the Jungle'. Eventually, the LittleBigPlanet PS Vita sequel was scrapped, and for a long while the LittleBigPlanet 3 sequel was titled 'Evergreen Park: Chapter 2', before settling with 'Evergreen Park: Revenge of the Bubbles'.

A LittleBigPlanet 3 addition to the Evergreen Park franchise was announced on July 8th 2014 at the T-Games Conference with a brief teaser trailer with no gameplay or title besides 'Evergreen Park LittleBigPlanet 3'.

The level series was officially revealed at Tri-Expo 2015 on October 18, 2015 with a trailer and gameplay demo. The level was teased again at Tri-Expo 2016 with another gameplay teaser, this time showcasing more environments and the improved level design.

The series' originally intended release date was 2015. However, as development over-lapped with Traffic Panic 2: Road Rage! and Traffic Panic: Multiplayer Mania! the release date was repeatedly delayed throughout 2015, 2016 and 2017.

On the 10th of May 2017 the level series' release date of 17th May 2017 was announced via creator Anderson's personal twitter. On the 11th of May 2017 Anderson realeased another tweet announcing the date, which was subsequently re-tweeted by the official LittleBigPlanet twitter account.

On the 17th May 2017 the adventure was published around 20:00 GMT. The series recieved mostly positive feedback, however there were many issues that were reported, mainly through Twitter, that lead the series to have a reputation of being in an unfinished state. Over the span of three days Anderson released 17 updates to the series, fixing all issues reported as well as adding new content such as a tutorial level and new character voices.

On the 19th of May the adventure was team picked by LittleBigPlanet and became level of the week for the week spanning 19th-25th May 2017.

Trivia

  • An area of the level 'Swinging Treetops' shares a likeness to an area of the scrapped 'Evergreen Park: Chapter 2' title for LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.
  • All of the models from the original Evergreen Park that have been ported over into the sequel (such as the models for minions, trees and bushes) have been modified in some way apart from the original Bubblesworth battle arena which makes a brief appearance in the introduction cutscene.
  • The Bubblespirit character is the only minion-related character in Evergreen Park history to have a dynamic eye.
  • Evergreen Park: Revenge of the Bubbles is the first instalment of Evergreen Park to take place in man-made structures such as a castle and a temple, instead of exclusively natural structures such as landscapes and cave systems.
  • A trailer for Evergreen Park: Revenge of the Bubbles was intended to be released in July of 2016 after substantial developments were being made. However, not long after the trailer was made, some parts had already been made outdated. The music in the trailer was also copyrighted, both factors eventually leading the trailer to not be published.
  • The opening scene of the cinematic 'The Powers That Be' whereby the character is chasing the minion was originally a moment of gameplay that took place at the end of 'Evergreen Park and the Temple of Doom'. The set and logic for this section are still present in the final level.
  • Originally in the cutscene 'Going on a Journey' there was a brief moment whereby the character ran down an urban street. This scene was eventually cut however as it was felt that it didn't fit in with the art style. The set and logic for the scene are still present in the level, with the movie cameras and sequencer logic taking place after the level link for the next level activates.
  • Originally in the cutscene 'A New Chapter' there was a title card which featured the character and a minion running past. The title card felt to be too jarring however, and the title was incorrectly written as 'Evergreen Park: The Bubbles' Revenge' so it was scrapped. The logic and set for the scene are still present in the level, with the sequencer logic and movie cameras still present on the sequencer after the level link for the next level activates.
  • Whilst the original level series featured only three different settings, 'Evergreen Park: Revenge of the Bubbles' features nine.
  • Originally in the level 'Winter Wonderland', the podium in front of Yellow Head had a blue minion on top which would shoot the player with an ice hazard and encapsule them in ice. The player would then have to shake the controller to break free, similar to the scrapped ice hazard of the original LittleBigPlanet game. Although the idea was later scrapped and the blue design would later be utilized for a water minion, the logic and assets for the enemy and testing equipment still remain in the level, however unaccessable.
  • At the top of the gameplay arena for 'Even Bosses Are Dead Somtimes...' is the template of the score bomb which the level copies for gameplay, however it is not visible to the player.
  • Outside of the gameplay arena of 'Even Bosses Are Dead Somtimes...' is a prototype for the Bubblespirit laser eye attack, the template for the four styles of spike for the Bubblespirit earthquake attack and the template for the score points which emit when the Bubblespirit is dazed.
